Speaking just about immigrants, the answer's pretty easy. Actually, I think Adam made this point, too. Anyone floating over from Mexico isn't necessarily too motivated, it was just a car-ride away, and now, here they are! (Also, you can factor in that most come from Catholic backgrounds, increasing the chances that they'll have more kids, thus making it harder to achieve real financial stability.) Asians, on the other hand (and my boss is Indian, as in from India), are already clearly more go-getters, because they are flying 1/2way across the world to start over, look for better things. So, that point, alone, makes them more motivated. Add onto that the fact that the average culture for the average Asian immigrant is less family-oriented, nmore goal-oriented, they know not to have too many kids, then there's the whole "honor" thing which would make them want to do everything they could to stay off any sort of public financial support. Blahblahblahblahblah.
