That is very true, clod. It's an issue discussed in Intro Psychology courses. The reason for this is social stereotyping and priming. Japanese immigrants in the US are stereotyped as relatively intelligent, highly motivated people. Conversely, Japanese immigrants in China are perceived in a different light, so they do not perform as well as Japanese immigrants in the US in certain areas. Social priming is also a reason for this. It has been demonstrated in experiments that in a group of test takers, if the proctor states before the examination a fact like "women perform poorly in this sort of examination," women tend to perform more poorly than a control group where this sort of social stereotype was not stated (i.e. there was no priming).
