Thursday, December 2, 2004 at 12:57 PM How shock-proof is the iPod? I'd like to jog with it, but I have flat feet and poor form, so I've yet to use a moving-parts device that could function when strapped to me. Some people say "Don't worry, it has a buffer" but buffers are next to useless if the player can't get a good read due to sustained shock. —Full Meat |

Thursday, December 2, 2004 at 2:30 PM Edited Thursday, December 2, 2004 at 2:39 PM Mine, which is the slim 20g model (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?family=iPod), came with two cables. One Firewire (which you need for the charger) and a USB (which is obviously good if you have no port for the Firewire on your PC). I just leave it on the charger, overnight, and it's good for my whole workday (8.5-10 hours), everyday. It also charges when you have it "docked" into the computer. I bought mine from Best Buy and bought the service plan, just in case, and I'd recommend you do the same. The only real snag I had was finding a way to keep my Lovelines and my music seperate, for when I want to shuffle all iPod tracks and just listen to music. What I did was I took all of my songs and changed the ID3 tags (which is easy with the iTunes program, and is the only thing that I like about iTunes) to say that they're all on the "My Jukebox" album and all Lovelines are listed under a different album title so I can just select the option to shuffle songs on a single record when I want to hear my music. The iPod is maybe the best thing that's ever happened to the Loveline fan. —tomdomaso |

Thursday, December 2, 2004 at 2:35 PM Edited Thursday, December 2, 2004 at 2:35 PM Oh, yeah... It's also awesome for jogging with. I bought one of those one-size-fits-all cases from the GAP (if you can still find one there, I'd advise picking one up... I've seen them as recently as a few weeks ago on the clearance rack for $4.00). The iPod slides around a little bit in there, so the back has gotten a few scuffs on it, but that just makes it look more punk rock and therefore cooler than yours. I've never had a music track skip, but I did have some skipping problems with a Loveline that was saved as a WAV file instead of in the MP3 format, so keep that in mind. —tomdomaso |

Thursday, December 2, 2004 at 6:05 PM Tomdomaso- Doesn't your solution eliminate your ability to browse by album? I have an iPod that I love. No complaints, whatsoever. I do, however use mine on a Mac, but I've head that the PC implementation is solid as well. An easier route to avoid shuffling loveline into your music, is to create a smart playlist that has all of the music that doesn't have 'Loveline' as the artist, and then just play that list, with shuffle on. In case you were wondering, I probably win the 'Nerd Tattoo' award for this forum, but there's something about the juxtaposition of 'nerd' and 'tattoo' that I find too funny to pass up.

Friday, December 3, 2004 at 1:03 PM "Doesn't your solution eliminate your ability to browse by album?" Not really. When I get new records (which I totally get leagally... honest) I put them on the iPod under the album title, and if any tracks make it on to my "iPod jukebox" album, I edit appropriately at a later time. I don't keep all of my CDs on my iPod. Just new stuff, Loveline episodes, and my, what I look at as, ultimate mix tape. It's slowly growing every day. The perfect beast. Random songs that I never want to skip over. ...and I have a tattoo that might rival yours in the nerd department. Saturday, December 4, 2004 at 4:42 AM The 40GB is the best value. comes with the dock so is only really $60 more than the 20 and get twice the space. And you will need the space when you start downloading the Lovelines... a good quality file is about 20MB or so. I get them on the Newsgroups and totally makes my long ass trip to work (90 miles-one way) a breeze! Any apple/mac questions? I can help!

Saturday, December 4, 2004 at 11:12 AM Nope, no questions as of yet. I got it last night and I am impressed. Update: Cool Packaging. But I guess that is what Apple is all about. I plugged it into my USB 2.0 card and it started charging right away. I was worried about that because on the apple website it says something about a "Y" cable or only being able to charge via firewire or something. And instead of using I_Trash (I-Tunes) I used the plugin for winamp and it worked like a charm. Winamp is so much better. The headphones aren't very good though. I am going to go out and get some better ones. Thanks for all of your input guys. —Juanus |

Sunday, December 5, 2004 at 10:02 AM I have an iPod mini, and I don't know if anyone else has encountered this problem with the version for Windows but-the iPod and iTunes software included with the player is extremely faulty. Every once and awhile, when I attempt to add more songs to my iPod, the software will say it needs to be reinstalled, and this has happened countless numbers of times. Is this because it's Apple software operating on Windows platform? —Folgers |

Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at 7:38 PM Ooh, lyrics. Hey, I like that not one of you clowns pointed out the prime problem with the ipod. It is not a hi-fi player. You can't fit much wave in it, you can't play ogg on it, and most importantly it doesn't support gapless playback, not even with wave files. Not even on itunes on the computer. Try listening to anything seamless on the ipod and enjoying it. It's fine if all you have are christina aguilera and 311 records, but if you want to listen to the 12th man, devin townsend, pm dawn and war of the worlds it's like listening to a cd by a summer pond at 7pm. Every few minutes another annoying bite from a mosquito. Losers! —MajandraFan |

Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at 7:55 PM Nah, a 320kbps 44khz MP3 encoded with LAME is about as hi-fi as you need to get (unless you're archiving). I've never seen a listening test were people could tell one of those apart from a non-lossy codec (flac or wav). Ogg is a higher quality codec than MP3, but it's largest strength is that it's patient free, and GPL'd. —ZT-In-Exile |

Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at 7:55 PM 1) It plays AIFF and Apple Lossless codecs. 2) You can rip an album as a single track (no gaps) (I am sure that iTunes can transcode from wav (lossless) to either of the Apple supported lossless codecs, I know early versions would play wavs. You can even upgrade iTunes by using the LAME mp3 encoder, which is slightly better than the Apple one) If you are that much an audiophile...I doubt any mp3 player will fit your needs. —Laxdude |

Saturday, January 21, 2006 at 11:01 AM Well, if you want to get technical...no, it does not come with a charger. but you can buy one for $50. It only pulls a charge from the USB cable, so if you do not have a powered hub, you have to plug it into your powered computer. This is, excluding price, the biggest true strike against the iPod. That and the 'dock' they sell online is only a hunk of plastic you you plug your ipod into - no usb cables, no power cables. if you want to hook it to anything you need to use the cable that came with the iPod...and if you want computer power off charging you need to buy the USB power adapter...which requires the same cable that came with your ipod (again, not included) —Laxdude |
