Monday, November 8, 2004 at 9:35 AM Griffin Techology has finally released radioSHARK, a TiVO like device for recording AM/FM radio. It's basically a USB antenna packaged with software that allows you to listent to live, time-shifted and scheduled radio. I've been running it on my Mac (it's also ported for Windows) to record Loveline, Stern and some right-wing AM radio and I have been pretty pleased with its performance. For those of you addicted to talk radio, you might want to check it out: http://griffintechnology.com/products/radioshark/ The software is still a version 1.0, so there are some bugs and features to be worked out, but overall it's really cool ... and hard to beat for $70 ... and Griffin is a great company making really cool products, mostly for Mac. FYI ... —liloa |

Monday, November 8, 2004 at 11:01 AM It's like a AM/FM receiver with recording software built in. Sure is a lot smaller than the 40 pound monster Sony rack size unit sitting next to my computer. What's the reception like? How far away have you been able to get FM? How far for AM at night? What's your geographical location like? Will you list your city? Looks cool, although I wonder how it compares with the best of the best in reception from Pioneer. —Colin |

Monday, November 8, 2004 at 11:23 AM It's like a AM/FM receiver with recording software built in. Sure is a lot smaller than the 40 pound monster Sony rack size unit sitting next to my computer. Yeah, the footprint of the unit is only about 1 x 2 inches with a height of about 7 inches. And the "gills" on the unit, the three slits in the middle, glow a blue color and then turn red when the unit is recording ... pretty cool! What's the reception like? How far away have you been able to get FM? How far for AM at night? What's your geographical location like? Will you list your city? I'm in San Francisco and have only used the unit to record local AM and FM stations. However, the station that Loveline and Stern is aired is pretty weak in the neighborhood where I live and I am able to tune it in quite well on the radioSHARK. I haven't played with AM at night to see how far I can receive a signal. There is a headphone jack on the unit that apparently can double as an external antenna, but I haven't tried it. The Griffin support page says: Can you connect an external antenna to radioSHARK? Yes. The radioSHARK has a headphone jack on the back that doubles as an external antenna port. Usually plugging in an audio extension cable or even a pair of headphones to this port will help provide better reception. Griffin currently does not provide any external antenna with the radioSHARK at this time. If you happen to be in the Bay Area and would like me to test out a station, lemme know and I'll report back on the strength of its signal. —liloa |

Monday, November 8, 2004 at 11:40 AM Edited Monday, November 8, 2004 at 11:44 AM Try 1070 KNX out of Los Angeles after about 6:30 or so. If no luck try again at 9:00. I've was in central Idaho this summer and pulled in KGO in San Francsico, KEX in L.A., Salt Lake City, Dallas, Tulsa Oklahoma and St Paul, Minnesota. That was a good night for skip. Fuck yeah!!!! Just a standard car stereo with a standard antenna. —Colin |

Monday, November 8, 2004 at 11:48 AM I was basically near the "S" in the word Boise and was able to receive all of those stations. Iw as really surprised I was able to receive OVER the Rockies. The L.A. and San Francisco stations was an easy grab, with really nothing in the way. The Sierra Nevadas yes, but the stations were so close. —Colin |

Monday, November 8, 2004 at 9:13 PM No luck with KEX or KNX ... sorry. Although I am in a room in my apartment that seems to get particularly bad radio reception. So perhaps a better location and second antenna might be able to pull them in? —liloa |
