Gmail (Google mail) is a program that let's you send e-mail, without having to delete mail once your inbox get's full. All messages are stored in a row (1000 total)

You never have to delete mail, and it's just like an IM conversation; all messages are kept right under one another.

Really cool program, I must say.

Not really Gmail is an email acount that has 1GB(1000MB) of space and its a web based email acount not a program.

Sorry about that. My mistake.
BTW, are they ever going to just let people register? People have been sending out Gmail invites for a while now. I got mine a few months ago.
Isn't it time to go public?
Thanks,

Not sure if this has been posted here...

I have this installed - kinda nifty. Google broke the last version, but there is a new one that works now. It's just a shell extension and installs in about 2 seconds (might have to reboot though).

"GMail Drive is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google GMail account, allowing you to use GMail as a storage medium.

GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google GMail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your GMail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag'n'drop files to.

Ever since Google started to offer users a GMail e-mail account, which includes storage space of a 1000 megabytes, you have had plenty of storage space but not a lot to fill it up with. With GMail Drive you can easily copy files to your GMail account and retrieve them again.

When you create a new file using GMail Drive, it generates an e-mail and posts it to your account. The e-mail appears in your normal Inbox folder, and the file is attached as an e-mail attachment. GMail Drive periodically checks your mail account (using the GMail search function) to see if new files have arrived and to rebuild the directory structures. But basically GMail Drive acts as any other hard-drive installed on your computer.

You can copy files to and from the GMail Drive folder simply by using drag'n'drop like you're used to with the normal Explorer folders."

If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, the 'aimlesswords' link has more info and user discussion.

Just, whatever you do, DO NOT download yourself a copy of Google Desktop Search. It opens your system up to creating a whole mess of holes for spyware ads to get through.

Folgers: Invitation sent.

Laith: You can't generate an invitation, Google awards them to you. When you have them, they show up prominently on the left hand side of your inbox. I've had my account for about 6 months and I've been given about 12 invites in 2 batches over that time.

My uninformed guess would be that it's a function of that amount of time you've held the account and an internal decision on the part of Google management as to when they want to increase usercount in their system. Knowing Google, they probably have some secret hyper-efficient algorithm for it.

GMail scares me. Is it really worth another Gig of storage space? I use Outlook Express and I haven't deleted email in two years, so I can search them all I want, but Google can't!

It's essentially like letting Google hold on to your diary for you, and they can show it to your parents (i.e. the authorities, or the spammers) whenever they feel like it! And it's just a lousy GIG! Jeez!

Explain the appeal, please.

Um, I don't know what you're talking about. Perhaps this link will answer some questions. (I scanned the last 2/3 of the page, so maybe I missed something, but the relevant stuff all seems to be at the top. And I saw nothing that I would call out of the ordinary for a web-based email provider there.)

Okay, on the one hand I have GMail telling me how wonderful and innocent they are, and on the other I have the "creepy" site telling me how they're gonna report me to foreign governments.

Seriously, it says stuff about your email only being private for 180 days, then they can legally do what they want with it, and that can't be good. And all for a lousy GIG!

I don't mean to poop anyone's party, but I'd feel weird about storing a bunch of my stuff on someone else's hard drive. Of course, I'm a pedophile... (Kidding!)

What does?

Santa's Mouth

Thursday, November 11, 2004 at 8:57 PM

It's on the "creepy" site. And I know it's an ANTI-Google site, but arguably, GMail is a PRO-Google site, so as far as I'm concerned, they're BOTH biased, and I have trouble believing one above the other. This is what is says:

"After 180 days in the U.S., email messages lose their status as a protected communication under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, and become just another database record. This means that a subpoena instead of a warrant is all that's needed to force Google to produce a copy."

See? So all I have is Google's word that they're legit, and this other site's warning that they're gonna get me. And that doesn't mean that they're contradictory, either. Legitimately, in 180 days they can get me!

I guess I'm just wondering why a gig is so important that we would risk the possible security issue. And I also wonder what's in it for Google to give away Gigs willy-nilly, except to sell the information gathered from all the stuff on their servers, and that feels a little too much like cooperating with a piece of spyware.

But don't let me stop you. It's the paranoia talking. ;)

I think it has something to do with how much e-mail you get at any given address. I thought about holding on to these, but then I decided to give up my livejournal, and the G-mail account I registered it with (that I got the invites on). So, midas well share them.

I'm really like an addict when it comes to retarded stuff online. To make sure that I didn't log back in to the lj or that g-mail account I changed the passwords on both to a list of characters from banging randomly on my keyboard.
