Thursday, November 4, 2004 at 5:56 PM Likeability? Nah, given the 11 anti-gay marriage amendments that passed and the catchword of the day - "values" - getting thrown around, it seems like most people in the middle and south just thought Bush was closer to them on issues such as gay marriage and leadership in general. What's ironic is that Bush's position is almost exactly the same as Kerry's position on gay marriage. Both are against it, but both support some limited form of rights to gay partners (Kerry specifically used the term civil unions while Bush was much more vague). And in leadership, Bush seemed to people to be a strong leader because he decided to go to war - twice. It doesn't matter that there are serious problems with his leadership from the now-divided West, Abu Gharaib, Guantanamo, the current situation in Iraq, etc. By not focusing so much on details and just keeping his message short and simple, Bush appeared to be more conservative and stronger than he actually was. "Without a doubt our epoch prefers the image to the real thing, the copy to the orginal, the representation to the reality, appearance to being. What is sacred for it is only illusion. More than that, the sacred grows in its eyes to the extent that truth diminshes and illusion increases, to such an extent that the peak of illusion is for it the peak of the sacred." -Ludwig Fuerbach —Ganthet |
