Greeting the callers

It occurs to me that Adam and Drew often ask "what's up" or "what's going on", etc. to callers who aren't entirely there due to abuse, drugs, etc... the people seem to think the hosts are actually asking what they're doing right at that moment, which they usually aren't. Maybe they should just stick to saying "what's your problem"; I've noticed that they have the highest success rate of getting the caller to respond with the question phrased that way.

This is something I noticed too. It's almost a reflex for the callers to say "not much" or "nothing much" in response to that sort of question. Sometimes the callers will go straight to their question afterwards, but more often than not they wait for someone to say "what's your question?"

Agreed. They always complain that the callers are dumb or not alert (which they sometimes are), but this is the typical "intro" to a call:

Adam: "Steven?"
Caller: "Yeah?"
Adam: "You're sixteen."
Caller: "Yep."
(Awkward, protracted silence)

What the hell do you expect? They get frustrated every time, but after a while, don't you think the problem MIGHT NOT BE WITH THE CALLERS?

I get annoyed every time Adam and Drew will ask the callers "what's up?" and the response is "nothing." Just once, I'd like for Adam to hang up on a caller who does that. If "nothing" is going on, why call the show?

good call joe, it's a nationally syndicated radio show, the callers need to get a hand in and pay attention

*clap clap clap*

By the way, the thing that amazes me is that the callers can't differentiate between phone screener Brian and Adam and Drew -- So often when Adam and Drew begin talking to a person, they think they're still on hold -- Think of how many times you've heard someone say, "Oh, is this Drew/Adam?" The other thing that still drives me absolutely nuts is when someone says, "Is Drew there?" -- Y'know, it's like, they can't process the fact that their phone call is being heard on headphones by a number of different people in a radio studio -- They seem to be under the impression that Adam and Drew are passing a telephone back and forth in order to hear the callers. But yeah, I do agree with Dark Laith and 007 in that, Drew and Adam know ahead of time that their callers are gonna respond to "What's up?" with "Nothin'.", yet they still ask it anyway out of a seeming passive-aggression to their callers. But at the same time, I can't really blame 'em -- if you're calling the show, you know how the format works simply by sitting on hold and listening to the callers who go on before you -- They really should know that "What's up?" means, "Ask your question now." Screwing that up is unnacceptable -- I mean, it's like using the F-word on the air, right after Adam has finished punnishing the caller before you for using the F-word on the air. We should change the football bit to "That bong's not a microphone."

On the other end of things, one of the oddest elements of the show that still gets me is the way Adam begins taking calls. He'll usually begin with a rant or some kind of discussion and then begin taking calls but there's never any seque. He doesn't say "let's take your calls" or "let's go to the phones". He'll just be speaking about left turn arrows then suddenly just say someone's name.

I also remember thinking that announcing the caller's age was annoying until guest Oswald Payton inquired about it. He asked if it was really necessary as you could basically tell the caller's age from their voice. Adam said it wouldn't work and proceded to prove himself right. Now I get the age thing.

Again, a lot of them are screwed up. I know we all hate catering to the lowest common denominator, but this situation is one of those kinds where it's kinda necessary.

Since we're ranting...

It always bugs me when the caller announces, "This call is for Dr. Drew." As if the ghonnoreah query was gonna be for the drummer from Jimmy Eat World, or for Adam for that matter.
