There is an alternate phonetic alphabet in use by some public service agencies in different areas of the country:

I always wanted to see a phonetic alphabet based on "non" phonetic letters -- for example:

That's right boys her name is "PAM" -- That's
P-Psychology
A-Aeon
M-Mnemonic

That alternate phonetic alphabet is generally used by law enforcement agencies. The first one posted is pretty solidly used for the military and anyone involved in maritime activities.

There is no official national system. Often the military system is different from civilian. I know pilots use Yankee for Y, not yellow
