It is almost as if they are trying to make Gmail seem like an exclusive system by offereing invites only, while invites seem to be very easy to get. I have had my account for 3 months and just started getting invites in the last week or two. It is ingenious though. It spreads the word about their product brilliantly and creates a demand. Theres also some other cool stuff like gmail-fs where you can mount a gmail account like a file system.
