Monday, August 16, 2004 at 2:17 PM It needs to be said more often. Good opinion piece by atheist activist Sam Harris. Maybe some day the world will take Adam's advice and classify extreme religious fundamentalism as the mental disorder it actually is. Monday, August 16, 2004 at 5:10 PM The Religion attaches itself to the skull of its victim, holding itself fast with six spider-like legs made of bone. It then forces its main weapon, a long proboscis ending in a sharp point, deep into the skull of its victim, enabling the Religion to control its host's every movement and action. The Religion is not without benefits to its host however; it greatly improves the strength and reflex of its host, and can extend the natural life span of the host by up to seven times! The host is a slave to the Religion for the rest of its life, always with the Religion upon its head like an ornate crown of ivory. When the host dies, the Religion will try to attach itself to another host, condemning the poor wretch to serve its new master. The only way to kill a Religion is to first kill its host, then as the Religion withdraws from its host, sever the proboscis before the Religion can attach itself to a new host - possibly you! Stats: (added to host stats; the Religion cannot survive on its own and will never be encountered alone) Strength: 6 Stamina: 7 Intelligence: High Attitude: Hostile (the Religion's Attitude is used in place of the host's as the Religion controls the actions of the host) —MajandraFan |

Monday, August 16, 2004 at 7:14 PM Good op-ed. The author's wrong about one thing, though: there is one terrorist group of Buddhist suicide bombers--the Tamil Tigers of Sri Lanka. Aside from that, he's right on target. —Coleman |

Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at 2:02 PM Eh.. I know its suppose to modern thinking to hate religious types but aside from the really, really overtly religious people (Al-Quaida on down) I dont think there is much reason to hate them. It's like.. whats the difference between the guy who completely sold out for God and your asshole boss who makes you work late because he can (as far as being assholes is concerned?). These religious people only barely affect your livelihood, leave 'em alone. I think if we start looking through the eyes God (or whatever you believe in) gave us instead of Eyes of the one who will decide our fate, maybe we'd be better off. Because overtly religious types are annoying people all around. And it has nothing to do with their beliefs. —Jason |

Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at 5:18 PM Not only talk too much, but talk too loudly and arrogantly and stupidly. Jason: I suppose we shouldn't limit the insanity classification to religion. Anyone in the grip of a rigid ideology that has no basis in fact and who would commit every conceivable atrocity to further that ideology ought to be classified as suffering from a serious mental disorder. —Coleman |

Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at 5:45 PM Coleman & Jason, I thought Adam was complaining because religious nuts get a free pass, so that's why he specifically attacked religion, because there's a double standard. Nobody gives those other ideologies that kind of indulgence. Adam just wanted to make the playing field level. —Docta |

Thursday, August 19, 2004 at 11:09 PM leave them alone... only if they leave us alone, no politics, pushing against birth control, stem cell research, rational thinking. A non-religious person has to live for their family, themselves and their friends. A religious person only has to deal with life until they die, then reach a cool ass heaven, never forget about repentance... that trumps all; molestation, rape, murder, incesest, etc. Religion is ridiculous, never forget that, live right, that makes a good person, not praying. There is no god, if there is let's start blaming him exactly as we praise him. Noah, myth. Hitler, reality. Abraham, myth. Stalin, reality. Eden, myth. Africa (dying of AIDS), reality. Where is that god afterall. we can't have good without evil, blah blah blah. why do we need good? we don't need good, we could be rational and fair, thus no good or bad, yet we require evil, even though it is not necessary. I lost my awesome Dad, who was home everyday for me, coached me in every sport that i wanted to play, supported me, listened to me, and encouraged me. Yet my junkie ass uncle is still living, as a deadbeat dad, my other dead beat uncle has been smoking at least one pack a day since he was 16, he's 56, my dad was 53 and got bit by a mosquito on top of the ten years of cancer to finish him off with west nile. God?????????? as far as i'm concerned if there is a god........... Fuck you asshole, where is my dad? he didn't believe in you, so i guess that he is in hell, even though he lived right, was faithful to his wife, children and community. That is not enough? i would never ask more out of anybody. Just remember, life is all we got, live it right then you'll be good. —redsmith007 |

Friday, August 20, 2004 at 1:01 PM Abortion Protesters Show Up at Wrong House Friday, August 20, 2004 SCOTIA, N.Y — An upstate New York woman says she feels "terrorized" after about 50 anti-abortion activists (search) showed up at her house. The protesters thought they were demonstrating outside the home of an Albany-area doctor who performs abortions. Instead, they chanted and held posters of mutilated fetuses outside the home of a couple with a two-month-old daughter. The protesters used a bullhorn to yell "Evil dwells here." The group apparently meant to target a neighbor who's an executive with Planned Parenthood Mohawk Hudson (search). Police were on hand but say the protesters broke no laws.
