It turns out maybe an eating disorder is not the (main) problem anyway.
According to USA Today, she's in a treatment center that treats addiction.

Friday, July 2, 2004 at 2:44 AM Given her gaunt, wasted appearance for the last year or more, I'd say she is definitely not getting enough to eat. Whether she is suffering only from anorexia, or whether she is so coked out that she never eats, the result is the same: She is starving herself to death. Friday, July 2, 2004 at 11:12 AM Yeah, did anybody see her on Saturday Night Live back in May? She looked terrible, like she had been punched in both eyes. I was going to watch, because they're hot and all (I'm only 20, so it's okay haha), but that kind of ruined it. But, I hope she gets better. And I think Adam was right a few weeks ago when he posited that Mary Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen (NO LONGER the "Olsen twins", dammit! ;)) had kind of run out of steam. —thejoeinme |

Friday, July 2, 2004 at 2:38 PM I have talked to anorexic girls who wouldn't be considered hardcore drug addicts, but who indulge in cocaine because it seems like it would help burn calories. So maybe Mary-Kate was anorexic anyway, and when she just wasn't getting skinny enough (in her own warped mind, of course) she started taking cocaine as another method of weight loss. I know, it sounds stupid, but I have known girls who follow this logic. Most of them are applying to top-tier universities and live under constant pressure. That would be Mary-Kate, too. It's very possible she is using drugs but my guess is that once she starts healing from the anorexia, she won't do cocaine, anymore, either. But anorexia is really difficult to treat and I wish her well in her recovery. —Joy |

Saturday, July 3, 2004 at 8:54 PM When someone is underweight, there is what is known as a "differential diagnosis," which means that simply being underweight can indicate many things. A "gaunt, wasted appearance" also does not mean that someone has an eating disorder.
Now one might say: then what does it mean? Well, among other things, it could mean that someone has a drug problem!
(And being underweight from drug use is not the same as anorexia or bulimia.) How do you think an eating disorder is diagnosed? Trust me, it's not easy to diagnose.
You think everyone who is in a low BMI percentile (very underweight) has an eating disorder?
(i won't go into the ways an eating disorder is diagnosed, or the many problems being underweight can be symptomatic of.) Consider the possibility that she in fact did have a drug problem, and drew recognized that. Maybe he even tried to help her. Then her publicist reports that she instead has an eating disorder. Drew is then asked if she has an eating disorder and (while he may know the truth of her drug problem), he can honestly say "I didn't notice anything [with respect to an eating disorder]. She hid it well." Now one might think that scenario is far-fetched, and still contend that drew is either an bad doctor or a liar. As to the former, ask yourself how drew would really know she had an eating disorder (from a medical standpoint), after working with her for a few days. You think they really spent alot of time together? The possibility that Drew may or may not have seen her noshing at the craft service table is absolutely meaningless. And similary, the fact that she was underweight in and of itself does not provide any diagnosis whatsoever, as explained above (and they were both quite petite to begin with, arguably making it difficult to even notice she was underweight). But one might say that drew still should have known it from the tabloid stories; Do you really think drew reads Star magazine (or even goes to the supermarket where he might see it at the chekout)? Drew is pretty smart, but he aint exactly up on pop culture.
As to the possibility that he's a liar: He could have honestly not recognized a true eating disorder, or even if he did, he could have thought that it was the medically ethical thing to do to not give a "no comment" answer, but answer the way he did. Bottom line: It's never a good idea to judge a book by its cover and try to diagnose someone on physical appearance alone. —joe bloggs |
