Friday, June 18, 2004 at 11:42 PM I didn't see the whole thing (came in when he was talking about his dad... why didn't JKL list his appearance on their web page? Someone else drop out?) but I don't think the Ace man does well on TV. He looks very uncomfortable and is not able to use his body, especially his mug, to good comedic effect. It's especially jarring because he's so funny on the radio, but his schtick just doesn't work on TV. It doesn't help that he's nervous and feeling rushed, so he's pushing out quick quips and not coming up with good stuff. He needs time to develop his rants, time he knows he's not going to get on network television. The awkwardness cannot be overstated; his iconic pose when standing next to Jimmy on the Man Show- elbows bowed way out, fake smile plastered on- should be framed in drama classes as Nervous Man on Camera. btw, did Lisa Ling start talking about Jimmy's penis on the spur of the moment or was that part of a continuing gag? —sprewell |

Saturday, June 19, 2004 at 12:23 AM Edited Saturday, June 19, 2004 at 12:26 AM I thought this was his best appearance thus far. He seemed to be making an effort to look to those imaginary cheat notes in more places than on his lap. The dialogue exchange with Jimmy was more productive than usual. He was smoother than usual. It wasn't great because that takes into account what I know of his quality on Loveline. It was good though. There may be hope for him. If this was a last minute replacement, he did something right in preparing or not preparing with the time he had after being notified. —Adam's Crows |

Saturday, June 19, 2004 at 8:52 PM Lisa Ling's reference to Jimmy's penis was spur of the moment. It was her attempt at pointing out how rude Jimmy is to Star. BTW, locally, Thursday's show was cut up with commercials. Jimmy began introducing the guy on Sopranos and suddenly a commercial showed up. After the commercial, they went back to Jimmy in mid-conversation with the guy. This happened twice during the show. I'm trying to figure out if it was a creative attempt at censoring, either locally or nationally. Anybody else have something similar happen?

Saturday, June 19, 2004 at 11:04 PM Edited Saturday, June 19, 2004 at 11:07 PM I knew a guy that worked for a TV station in a small town years ago. Late at night they would gradually lower the master volume when playing a movie. Then they would crank it back up all of a sudden to scare the crap out of viewers. They also had a kid show where I was a guest. They would interview kids between cartoons. Before leaving my babysitter's (his wife) home headed for the show I was too embarassed to admit I had to go the bathroom when she asked. I ended up wetting my pants on stage. :-) —Adam's Crows |

Sunday, June 20, 2004 at 3:28 PM I've been trying to catch up with JKL recently here in the East Coast. I've been noticing for a while though that the shows are "previously recorded". They used to only show this when an episode of Nightline went on for too long, but this is now a nightly thing. Did ABC decide to tape the shows to reduce the "risk" of "life-threatening expletives" going through the air. It seems that if the show is going to last several years, it'll be pretty bogus calling it "live" when it's been recorded. —Mike Hunt |

Sunday, June 20, 2004 at 4:03 PM Yes, they tape the show a few hours before it airs, so that the homo fruits at ABC have enough time to review it for any objectionable material. —Jeremy |

Sunday, June 20, 2004 at 5:20 PM It was painfully obvious for a while that they were pre-taping the show because during the sidewalk bit, it was still light out; Also, Jimmy talked about it on one of the shows when they first started doing it - but in the past few days, it has once again been dark outside for the sidewalk bit, so I think that they either have gone back to their "live" format, or maybe they just moved it up an hour or so, but are still pre-taping it - not sure which. —Kevin U. |

Monday, June 21, 2004 at 12:04 AM If the show gets past the experiment status ABC will probably end up shortening it to The Jimmy Kimmel Show or just Jimmy Kimmel. It isn't doing good enough to be considered a solid candidate for reupping for years to come. It took Conan at least 2 years before they felt they could relax. That show was on the line for cancellation many times and ithelped that it happened to outlast the employment of its executive critics according the Andy Richter. —Adam's Crows |
