Saturday, March 27, 2004 at 7:53 PM Is there anything more beautiful than a beautiful, beautiful flamingo, flying across in front of a beautiful sunset? And he's carrying a beautiful rose in his beak, and also he's carrying a very beautiful painting with his feet? And also, you're drunk.

Sunday, March 28, 2004 at 10:16 PM A buddy of mine swears by the Alka-Seltzer "Morning Relief" (I think that's what it's called...suffice to say that it's Alka-Seltzer's hangover remedy). I haven't tried it myself, simply because I keep forgetting to buy it before getting tanked. —B |

Monday, March 29, 2004 at 8:41 PM Edited Monday, March 29, 2004 at 8:47 PM To prevent a hangover pre-drinking: 1) Eat cabbage. Ancient Romans believed the curative properties of this, and thought it could be eaten before or afterwards to prevent hangovers. In fact you can use raw cabbage as a tincture for healing joint pain. From my experience if I eat cabbage (raw, as in cole slaw, or cooked, as in cooked with apples) before I get my drink on, I don't feel the effects nearly as much and can drink much more without having a problem the next day. (I'm pretty much a lightweight) Eating it with a hangover hasn't helped, although I have only remembered to get some once when I was hung. I think it has something to do with the large amounts of sulfur. Someone has also advised me that beans also work quite well, but I haven't tried those. 2) Don't mix your kinds of alcohol. Don't drink a lot of sugary alcoholic drinks. (most cocktails, wine, some varieties of beer) Plus some liquor and beer have impurities that exacerbate the hangover headache. Afterwards: 1) Bitters. This is a traditional European herbal drink that is a kind of health tonic. You can find these in health food stores, and sometimes in liquor stores with all the small "airplane service-sized" liquor bottles that are usually near the front counter. Some well-stocked bars also have these bitters. The one that can be found most easily is Underberg. Another brand that I've found is Gammel Dansk. A word of warning: It tastes awful. However, the the effect on one's ravaged system borders upon magical. Also a word of warning, do not take acetaminophen (Tylenol) before or after drinking as it cam damage your liver. Also, taking aspirin is not good if you are in your teens, as there is a risk of Reye's Syndrome. —GDG |
