Adam is great on Loveline: funny and insightful on a nightly basis.

Why is Adam such a goof everywhere else?

I've seen him on Kimmel, MTV, The Man Show, heard about him on Stern.... he just seems out of place everywhere but loveline....

Anyone agree? And if so, can you tell me why?

I agree when he was on JKL it was really wierd he did his usual LA airport marathon rant. For some reason he came off as a major asshole when he did it on TV. Radio is more forgiving lets you get away with ranting.

I would bet that he's not as comfortable on TV as he is on radio. He was (and is) just fine on Howard.

Maybe all the lights and the fact that he can't wear sweats and scratch himself...

Y'know what the problem is? Adam's just not himself anywhere else -- the Adam Carolla you get on the radio every night is presumably the Adam Carolla -- that's the Adam Lynette knows -- that's the Adam Jimmy and Drew know off the air. The Adam you get on JKL or the Man Show (or anything else for that matter) is Adam trying to act like himself. He comes off like he's doing a parody of Adam Carolla. For those of you who are interested, there was a really good conversation about this very topic between Adam and Aisha Tyler from the show dated 02.03.04. It takes place in the first five minutes. Adam's basically talking about his appearance on Jimmy's show and why he feels it never goes well. If you've never heard that show, you should definitely check it out. It's a great clip.

that's because on the radio, he's unprepared, just reacting to things and going with the flow. that's his element. of course, he starts off the show with a rant about the day, but its not something he sat around and planned... more like something he made a mental note of, or something that had been on his mind all day.

on tv, they want to know what you're gonna be talking about. so its all pre planned.

so in essence, he is playing himself on tv. its his ideas, but they seem forced because, they are. that's not his style.

I think Drew deserves some credit - he's a great straight (but very, very passionate) man to Adam. That's the missing element when Adam is solo - he doesn't have anyone to bounce off of. Everytime I see him on TV, it's a disaster - but he's brilliant on LOVELINE.

Lemme tell y'all something I've said time and time again -- IMHO, the best loveline episodes are when either of the hosts is solo -- with Drew's solo nights, I learn a ton. With Adam's solo nights (Of which I've only heard one, you can download it off the database), it's the funniest episode I've ever heard. There, I said it.

Adam did well when he was on Politically Incorrect for the spontaneity of the format similar to Loveline as mentioned by someone earlier.

When he has to play a character and read lines he needs Vallium and an analstickectomy.

When Drew is alone he does come off rather.....harsh. But there's a reason for this, as Drew feels he needs to bring some of Adam's comedy into his bit. He tries to give the responses that Adam would in an attempt to have things be the same, but they're not.

In a way Drew's right. If Drew had to do the show for 2 months without Adam and didn't try to bring any humor into it, the diehards like us would still listen, but a large percentage of the casual fans would leave.

In a way Drew's wrong. Drew is there not for his comedic prowless, but for his knowledge as an ADDICTION MEDICINE SPECIALIST, as Adam would say. He definitely is best when sticking to what he's good at.

This is more of a problem when Drew is alone than when Adam is alone. Adam alone, it's 95% humor, some help from what he's learned from Drew. People love the humor, it'll still fly.

I'll agree that Dr. Drew attempts humor, but that's not why he comes off like an a-hole when he does the show solo. Dr. Drew is very condescending to the callers. We all know the callers are mostly idiots, but Dr. Drew treats them like idiots. Even though Adam is usually the one to berate the callers, ironically, it's Drew who is really rude to them when Adam isn't there.

adam will sprinkle a little sugar here and there by saying "hey babydoll" or "c'mon buddy" and even when he says "listen tardo" its often in a friendly way, if you know what i mean. he'll switch up the tone of his voice so he sounds more sympathetic.

drew has one tone when he's alone, and its a mix of condescension and disdain. which is wierd, because he's often more sympathetic and defensive of the callers when adam's around.

i agree with whoever said, that drew tries to play both roles when he's alone. and he's not good at playing bad cop.

basicly, adam sets the tone, and drew plays off of that either in going along with it or trying to balance it out.

when he's alone, he has no idea how to do that.

I agree that it has something to do with "playing himself" rather than "being himself" but I also think that the audience has different expectations too.

For instance in Loveline, he's ad libbing everything. He's improvising. It's funnier because it's off the cuff not because the line's a better one.

It's not just the delivery, it's the reception.

I think it has a lot to do with just the fact that he's been there for so long. I remember 4 or 5 years ago, there were long stretches where adam wasn't really funny, he just sounded sullen and depressed. Now he's in his element, he's reached a comfort level that you just can't get from being a guest on a show once every few years. It's become his home turf, and he really doesn't feel like he has anything he needs to prove.
Like stuff with the Man Show, I think he just isn't that great of an actor, so when he has to read cue cards and act out bits, it just feels unatural.

What's the solo episode of Adam you're talking about?
