WAAF Taking Poll To Can Loveline

Yes, there is a poll up and taking Loveline off the air is the choice that's winning. Not being able to vote I wrote the DJ an email about it. I also plan to email this to the morning show and programming director.

Dear Hsu,

Your attempts to get Loveline off the air are not in all fairness. Not everyone can vote through the E-Force poll. However some of us can give an opinion through E-Mail, which is what I am doing.

Loveline is the best thing on the station. Over the past 7 or 8 months it has been on I have grown to love it, and now I don't know what I'd do if it was gone.

What's there to play insted of Loveline? The new Puddle of Mudd or that "Cold Heart Bitch" song by Jet for the 900th time in the same day? I know that's just what I want to hear again. The same songs by talentless hacks again while I could be listening to Loveline.

I'm aware you plan to start "Harder Faster" at 11 if Loveline is taken off the air. This is a nice change from the mainstream rock that plays all day. However not being much of a metal fan it is not of any intrest of mine.

Loveline's target audience is the 13-25 demographic which I fit right into. I don't expect a grown man like yourself to enjoy it all too much. Nor do I expect any of your stations demographic listeners to enjoy it. However I know many people to tune in just to hear Loveline.

It'd be a shame to lose the only Loveline outlet in pretty much all of New England. So please just keep the show on for the fans.

Thank You

P.S. There is a public petition going around to keep the show on the air. There are people out there who want to hear Loveline. You're just not one of them.

Discuss this poll and E-mail the DJ with your opinion.

Pretty forceful! Just make sure you correct some of the spelling mistakes you have. For instance, "insted" in the third paragraph. Good email though and I really hope it works. It would be shame for such a large market to lose Loveline. BTW, where is this poll at and who can vote?

Yo can someone plz explain why exactly Loveline is gone from WAAF? Is it permanent or is this Mr. Hsu's Week of Fun? Confused!

For those of you unfamiliar with the miserable state of Boston radio: WAAF is about the single worst channel in the entire state of New England, catering almost exclusively to slowly aging rock afficinados (average age: 35.) Thanks to the lack of Loveline we got to hear some Pearl Jam circa 1991, which let me tell ya, was really great.

It is official. Loveline is permanently off WAAF 107.3 in the boston area. This is the worst thing to ever happen! I recomend everyone to go to waaf.com and go to mike shu's page and vote for the stupid ass pole question about keeping loveline on. I would also recomend calling the station or emailing mike and telling him your opinion(bring back loveline). This is an outrage and something must be done.!

No offense to those folks behind the petition, but my guess is that it's not going to be particularly effective, as it would seem (given on air comments by Mr. Hsu) that the people at WAAF aren't particularly interested at all in keeping Loveline; this is somewhat conterintuitive, given that WAAF's ratings have been in Freefall since Spring '00, and the 18-25 MALE ROCK GUY market is, in essence, dead. Anyway, my guess would be that the proper people to contact would be figures of authority at Entercom Boston (WAAF's parent controlling entity.)

I did a lil' web investigation, and the VP of WAAF is Julie Kahn, who can be reached at jkahn@entercom.com. From the small amount of press she's generated, it would appear that she's actually fairly concerned with keeping the stations running + generating ratings.

The other VP worth contacting is Tom Baker at tbaker@entercom.com. He's the one who gave Kahn her job.

Remember, be respectful; these people are salaried professionals and have no reason to take any guff from you! A quick investigation of http://commons.somewhere.com/bostonrw (which is a site dedicated to Boston Radio news) should give you the proper ammunition you need to make a convincing case. WAAF's ratings have been in the decline for some time and as http://commons.somewhere.com/bostonrw/2004/Boston.Radio.Watch.--.014.html points out, Loveline was added as a way to try and attract new listeners (i.e., people other than the 10,000 18-25 ROCK MALES) to the station. Which it apparently did.

Ta ta.

Yes, it is now official. Loveline is gone.

As for the poll it's on their members only E-Force section.

Good news though. Loveline is on 96.5FM Hartford, but I get static with it and I'm in Connecticut.

If anyone cares about keeping Loveline on waaf, HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO-

Go to:

http://waaf.listenernetwork.com/surveys.asp

Sign up for their "E-Force" gimmick, and then you can vote. The question is worded: "Do you think Loveline sucks?"

Let the management hear us loud and clear: Bring back Loveline, and terminate Mike Shu.

Unfortunately, you need to sign up for the stupid "E-Force" thing before you can vote in any of the surveys. Also, I'm not sure if the link is still available more than 48 hours after the survey was listed.

...but take heart. Max Krasny from Westwood One just sent me an email, responding to the fact that WAAF has discontinued Loveline, and he wrote:

"Please have all your friends call the station...we are looking for a new home and will keep you posted."

Ostensibly, 'a new home' would refer to another radio station in the metro-Boston area. In the meantime, I will continue to write letters to the powers that be...

Lets start sending E-Mails to FNX. Their network of I think 4 New England stations will hit all of New England. Not just the aera WAAF hits. Making more Loveline fans in the porcess.

Speaking of which, I'll be on kbfr.org in just about an hour.

We're part of a hypothetical network, called RPRN. Its less hypothetical than a gaussian surface,

In the absence of Loveline on WAAF last night, I was rather angsty. So, I decided to take my paperwork out to the car, then proceeding to drive an hour due west, from my home in SE Massachusetts to the Rhode Island/Connecticut border, until I hit a pocket where 96.5 WTIC came in loud and clear. It was 10:07 pm, and Loveline had just begun. It felt like a small victory.

I listened on 96.5 last night as well. However I have static which sucks, but it's worth it.

Do you think its possible to do some sort of big external mount FM antenna, and pick up the other station?

Yes, you can depending how far away you are. You need to be able to receive the signal at least marginally if you expect the antenna to pull it in nice and clear (which is of course what we want!) You would have best results with a yagi antenna or a quad. I'd recommend a yagi. If anyone wants to build one, they aren't that hard, but you have to do a good job.

Antennas for receiving are easier because the measurements do not have to be exact like when you are transmitting.

A yagi antenna looks similar to a TV antenna with the periodic elements. The simplest has 3 elements: a reflector, a driven element, and a director. The more directors you have, the higher the gain of the antenna, and the narrower the beamwidth (more directionality).

If anyone wants to build one, let me know and I'd be happy to help.
Below are some links describing how to build a yagi for the FM broadcast band.
