I bought some of the Americanized Absinthe a few months back. It was about $40 a bottle, included the cutesy little sugar spoon.

To be fair to the product, I tried it after an evening of (many) microbrews, so my experience and opinion may be somewhat clouded. I didn't like the stuff. The taste was like Jagermeister and Drano, plus a packet of Sweet and Low tossed in for measure. And it was warm- I hate warm alcoholic drinks. I didn't get any hallucinogenic effect, just a disappointment at having spent $40 for nothing. Left the bottle at my buddy's house, making him promise to force others to try it and get their opinion.

No it wasn't, it's just alcohol with thujone extracted from wormwood, and you can still buy real absinthe with the thujone content right on the side of the bottle next to the proof. And it is psychoactive

I don't think you can buy absinthe with any significant amount of thujone in the United States. Manson got his from Europe.

I've been 'researching' absinthe for a many a month now, and thought I'd through in some words. Pretty much any absinthe anyone can get nowadays is probably just high-proof alcohol with coloring or flavoring or some such. The old thing about absinthe being so horrible and deadly is slightly incorrect, overlooking the fact that the masses in Europe drank liquer full of unknown chemicals to make the drink green, louche, and taste of anise. Then they were drinking from pewter containers. A good example is the famous absinthe murder, where the guy literally drank gallons of alcohol including a glass or two of absinthe, but guess which drink was blamed? Also there's the usual thing of saying van Gogh was crazy from absinthe, but really he was just crazy all by himself, and sort of drank paint thinners and stuff. And as for any 'hallucinogenic' properties, I think that rumour is perpetuated by the poets' descriptions of the drink. It's not a drug and won't get high or trip, if you spend some large amount of money on classically prepared absinthe with the entire lot of herbs and everything, then the most that would happen is a slightly euphoric kind of inebriation, in the same vein as people describe tequila and whiskey as having different affects. Those are my few words, have fun.
