I'm just wondering - cause I heard on on the show last night, and there was another one recently where the smoke detector that died while Adam was waiting for the 30 second chirp - if this is a common sort of thing.

Do you guys hear smoke detectors at friends houses or in your own? This seems like a sort of phenomenon - and it can't just be loveline callers. and i don't think it's just stupid people. it seems like a really strange thing that people have these things on the ceiling, over their bed, chirping every 30 seconds for months and months. this is strange. any ideas

I have a damn smoke detector that chirps every 30 seconds as well. I hardly notice it now considering i'm already used to the damn chirping.

Maybe people know they'll get some good air time and do some planning.

I have never in my life heard a smoke detector chirping because of a low battery.

clodhopper, maybe you have the electric kind, but trust me, they beep when the battery voltage gets low.

Lord, mine was beeping for not 5 minutes before I shot it across the room. The battery fell out and it's still laying the, but I really don't know. I've never really been to anyone's house where one was just chirping away. I have no idea how people get used to them, one of the most annoying things in the world.

Not a smoke detector, but a CO2 detector and JESUS is that chirp loud.

The whole smoke detector thing sounds like great fodder for a PSA! Maybe Adam and Drew could write and produce it. Imagine, a swell of dramatic music and then:
Drew: "Fire safety is a serious consideration."
Adam: "So listen up, screwballs - replace your damn smoke detector batteries."

At my old house, we had a chirping smoke detector for a good few months, but we have vaulted ceilings and so it was a good 15 feet up. I kept harassing my roommate to do something about it since he was the one who actually owned the house, but he never bothered right up till when I moved out.

Our smoke detector not only chirps, but goes off when there is nothing wrong in the house. We have replaced the batteries and it still chirps. It's driving us crazy. I guess I'll have to hire an electricion to see what's going on or do any of you out there have any suggestions that won't be as expensive. My husband is very handy.
