Adam quitting the show?

Bad Directions

+

Friday, September 5, 2003 at 2:02 PM

I heard something on the Dropkick Murphys show that kinda bothered me -- Adam was saying that his contract was only for 211 more episodes, etc etc...and he was gonna leave the show (or at least that was the sentiment I got), it was hard to tell if he was joking or if he was serious. I doubt he was serious, but anybody got any insight?

How do their contracts work? Do they sign them yearly anyway? Would Adam tell us if he were leaving in a more dignified manner than an off-hand comment to Dr. Bruce? I certainly hope so...

I hope Adam doesn't leave the program. He is such an important part of Loveline.
I don't recall hearing that comment. Did it sound like he was joking or was
he serious?

Screw it if Adam leaves. Although I don't think he's going to, if he does I really won't give that big of a shit. If he leaves, he's doing it for the better. for him self.

As long as Adam's happy, I'm happy.

I doubt he would know exactly how many episodes he had on his contract. I'm sure he was kidding. If not, then it's a good thing he doesn't have anything else going on. He has nowhere else to go other than Crank Yankers.

It did bother me a few months back when he said he was working on a deal with ABC though (I think Kathy Griffin was the guest). He didn't explain what he was talking about, but I was thinking he might become Kimmel's permanent co-host... That would definitely be the end of loveline since the shows overlap.

Adam was making a rough estimate based on days in the number of weeks during that period of time. He does have other gigs. In addition to those that he has mentioned, Adam seems to reveal less noteworthy bits and pieces from time to time in conversations. He is a writer for JKL, he does voices for cartoon characters, he does some celebrity events like roasting Carson Daly and the baseball game in Chicago, there are the random guest spots on shows like Dawson's Creek, he has his high-end carpentry/contractor work, etc. He is not earning $2.2 million a year doing Loveline. I doubt he will leave before the show itself dies -ratings fade.

You forgot a couple of things Art, he does Crank Yankers.........duh, Burger King Commercials whch earned him an insane amount of money, stars in crappy movies and cartoons like Frank McKlusky, C.I., and the Buzzlightyear Cartoon Show, did that Death Voice in like 4 episodes of Family guy, Mountain Dew commmercial and Best Buy commercial from way back. He's making the big bucks.

Well, as long as we're talking about all his small gigs, don't forget the Babe Ruth commercial (that I haven't seen ever despite the fact that he was paid for it and even given a case of the candy) and the 1800 Collect commercials.

And from replays of the "The Man Show"

So many of these appearances either were not aired nationally, I glossed out of consciousness during breaks, or I did not know it was Adam. I did not know what Adam looked like at the time. Some people have criticized Carrot Top in these ads. I had always thought he sucked. It seemed like he was helping an old friend from the road when Leno had him on The Tonight Show. But the writing and his part is really funny. They look like they're spending lots of money preparing them. Were they as polished when Adam did them?

This line of work swells exponentially. Not only do you improve and gain credit with experience but the recognition factors in. Loveline is at least a nationally syndicated show. It is an icon of pop culture at this point. It is Adam's stage. It is like knowing and associating a band name with the singer. It isn't called The Adam and Drew Show but it is the Adam and Drew show.

I doubt also Adam would leave before people stopped listening. Maybe tastes and trends will shift and there won't be an audience for Loveline. More likely I think they will need to adjust their demographic from 13-25 yrs to 9-45 as sexual awareness hits earlier and all of Adam's "screwballs" grow older.

Wasn't the whole point of Adam talking about his contract being up because he felt badly that the caller had a brain injury and wasn't just a regular 'tard Loveline caller? I think he was just doing a bit of comedy where some levity was needed.

You guys are getting too worked up about this; Adam gets a lot of fulfillment from doing the show, as well as it providing an immediate forum for him to do his style of comedy. Although I do suspect he may move on when this contract is up, it will only because at 40 (albeit an immature 40) he's going to be less relevant to the target demographic. It may not even be his decision to make.

Aren't we forgetting that Adam really enjoys, and seems to have a passion for "helping the kids"?

Also, Adam works only 2 hours a night doing loveline. I doubt he's ready to walk away from such an easy gig so readily.

Just like ONW mentioned, I've always had the feeling that Adam was probably working on a deal to become Jimmy's permanent co-host. Although the shows do overlap, the last 5 minutes of Jimmy's show doesn't require a co-host -- it's basically just Jimmy throwing to the band, and then saying 'goodnight'. That gives Adam plenty of time to get to the make-shift studio that they've used on previous occasions we he's done Jimmy's show -- as a matter of fact, the last time or two he was on JKL, he didn't even miss the Loveline intro. Now whether or not he'd want to do Loveline from Jimmy's studio Monday through Thursday is another question all together...

As an avid JKL viewer I would have to say that I think Adam will never go beyond writing and occasionally guesting for the show... I believe that Jimmy and his production team like the rotating weekly cohosting that they have set up, and they wouldn't want to change it. Also... one thing Jimmy promised the ABC executives when starting the show is that it would not be a network television version of "The Man Show", so it makes sense to keep Adam from becoming a permanent part of the show in order to avoid that correlation.
As far as concerns of Adam leaving Loveline, he has said nothing that would seriously hint at him wanting to do that (or I haven't heard it); as others have said, his comment the other night was part of a joke where he asked bruce to fill in for him till his contract was up, only some 200 or so show, while he went to hell. I would imagine that despite his constant ranting and insults to the callers Adam does enjoy his time cohosting Loveline and he probably gets some sort of satisfaction that we don't hear about when he helps callers... I also think that Adam enjoys working with Drew, and that the only thing that would prompt Adam to leave is Drew going first. Of course, all we can do is speculate at this point but I will always be hoping that many decades from now I will still be listening as they both broadcast out of a retirement home using Adam's zephyr; quiting the show only once they can no longer physically speak for 2 hours. Or if you are more reasonable and can't imagine that kind of extreme then you can always hope for atleast for another solid gold decade or so.

Jimmy Kimmel will not change the format to a permanent co-host. I mean come on, I give you the ability to think with some imagination and you come up with such nonsense. Now go masturbate without a magazine for practice.

Adam talks about quitting from time to time. As already mentioned, I think he's making a joke, blowing off steam, and/or doing the old "I'm gonna quit" ploy for a better contract like Howard Stern does a lot. It will happen eventually I think, but no time in the near future. While I don't see it happening either, him permanently co-hosting Kimmel would easily be do-able, adjustments can be made. And format changes do happen, I never thought I'd get used to watching Conan without Andy but I did and they never brought anybody else in, which they thought they might. I think Adam does it because he truly does love it, because while I'm sure he's making good money, it's still radio money. And let's not forget how much he's helping Drew too! We all know Drew was making zero to almost-zero money for the radio until Adam came along. Adam knows he's helping making his buddy Drew a nice pile of cash too just being there. They have a "favored nations" contract together don't they?

I agree with all the past people who said that Adam is unlikely to leave. What other venue gives him the ability to rant freely over the air and get paid for it? Loveline is the dream gig for someone who just likes to be themselves and entertain at the same time. It's only about ten hours of work a week too and personally, I don't think Adam would drop that gig unless someone happened to make him want to.

Now that's the spirit. You are beginning to use your minds. Adam dilly-dallies with the smoke detectors, "...go down gamblin...," and stops the show to get whatever response he expects because he is making Loveline his show -not a Q&A for nursing callers. Hell, (Yes, I AM creator of all things including swear words), if you can run the show why not make it a comedy show first and a helpline maybe fourth or fifth on a list of possible activities? He is a good student. Truely a god in his own mind. Now if only my only begotten son were more like Adam... I did create adoption.

I didn't see Andy Roddick play today. But I did watch Agassi and Ferrero; I love tennis
and enjoy hearing John McEnroe do the commentary. It's like getting a tennis lesson
every time he covers a match. He does a super job.

I guess I shouldn't have been surprised to see Agassi lose. He was scheduled to play
here in Cincinnati a few weeks back and pulled out of the tournament. Maybe he isn't
feeling very well. Plus they had rain delays this past week and had to postpone
matches. Maybe Andre Agassi was just tired.

Agassi was showing promise when he won the third set. I thought he would go on to
win the match in five sets. When he came back from love/40 in the 4th set and then was at deuce
with the advantage, I thought he was going to redeem himself. Oh well...there is always
another Grand Slam.

Agassi is a great player. Maybe not as good as John McEnroe. But then I am biased. I've
been a John McEnroe fan for years.

When Ferrero was interviewed after todays semi-final match he said he knew that the audience
would be rooting for Roddick to win the U.S. Open. It should be an interesting match tomorrow.

God would like to speak to the Angel.

Ferrero is an exciting player to watch. He has a variety of surprises in his bag to draw from. Agassi was off from the weather delays and his age factored into the ability to snap back -Ferrero had that edge. Ferrero is also very smart and recognized an effective strategy for playing Agassi.

Agassi knows what takes priority and has cancelled relatively minor events throughout his career when his health was in question for an upcoming match. It is disappointing when Agassi does not win a major. His age, history and determination seems unrewarded at those times. It is amazing he still has so much desire to improve and continue to push.

McEnroe brings so much to the experience. As great a player as he was, he is far better as a commentator adding so much color and enthusiasm to the game of tennis. We understand the magnitude of what is going on through his interpretation, such a compelling point of view. He was an entertaining guest host when he covered Dave Letterman's show during his recent bout with shingles. Very real, spontaneous, outspoken and funny. I miss Chris Evert when she handled the women's events and paired with Johnny Mac.

If I had to pick a winner I'd say Ferrero. Roddick will show more fatigue. It will be a good match. Not as good if they had not played three intense matches three days in a row. And not as great as the Capriati/Henin-Hardenne match Friday night. Henin-Hardenne is another exciting player.

I agree with you...

I think Ferrero has a great chance of winning. But, as Ferrero said yesterday
the crowd at the U.S. Tennis center will probably be with Roddick.

I hate to say it; but age is a factor for Agassi. I still love Andre though and I will
always root for him when he is scheduled to play, regardless of his seed status.

I too loved it when John McEnroe hosted David Letterman. But, Letterman overlaps Jimmy Kimmel
Live so I only heard some of his appearance on Letterman. What I did hear was hilarious and
he did great. He is quick on his feet and extremely witty.

I don't know if you caught any of the few that were televised...but John McEnroe
hosted a game show. It only aired a few times. It measured a persons heart rate and the
contestants were suppose to stay under a certain heart rate with frightening conditions
thrown at them while answering questions. I wish I could remember the name of
the show. He did super with that also.

Yes...I love hearing John McEnroe do color commentary. But.....I also think he is one of
the best tennis players of our time. I love watching him on the court-singles and
doubles. I think he still plays as a member of the seniors. Doesn't he?

I was bummed when he gave up the coaching status for Davis Cup; but, Patrick McEnroe (
his brother) does that now. John was so devoted to Davis cup and what it stands for...
his decision to leave was probably extremely hard.

Not only is John a good game show host, talk show host, color commentator and tennis player
but..he is a wonderful father. Every now and then you will see one of his kids join him
while he is up in the booth doing the tennis commentary.

I miss hearing Chris Everett do commentary. Do you know why she stopped?

Take Care.

Angel,

I was able to catch a portion of the game show "The Chair" McEnroe hosted. It was not enough time to form a fair opinion. I believe he could find his place given the time to settle in with the format, I just remember the premise was simple but the manner in which they executed it was bizarre. I thought what little I saw was beneath him.

I suspect he quit being Davis Cup team captain because he was frustrated with the way it is handled. He has voiced many problems and I don't think things could change quickly enough for him. The Davis Cup schedule conflicts with other majors that are perceived as more important and the locations change. Many of the top ranked players do not participate because it jeopardizes their chances to compete effectively in Wimbledon, and the Australian, French and US Opens.

I saw an interesting interview McEnroe did with Charley Rose 6/11/02 where he spoke of his marriage with Tatum O'Neal. He has had many battles trying to gain sole custody of the kids because of her alleged drug addiction. He apparently has a stable marriage with Patty Smyth. There are 6 kids between them. 3 Tatum, 2 Smyth and 1 from Smyth’s previous marriage.

It is funny that he named his band The Johnny Smyth Band. In one show Patty made a rare guest appearance as singer and they fought after Mac went out into the audience playing a lead on guitar. She accused him of trying to upstage her and he claimed he was just trying to make more room for her onstage. He quit the band 4 months after they married. He opened a SoHo art gallery in NY. He does still play doubles on the seniors circuit. He holds the all-time record for fines. He is highly regarded for his commentary but resents getting more credit for that than his accomplishments as a player. His book is named after his famous line at Wimbledon; "You cannot be serious."

Chris Evert does commentary on NBC's cable channel and coaches tennis in Florida. I recently saw an ad for her Club Med style tennis camp. Maybe it was a better contract for her at NBC. McEnroe is able to work NBC, CBS and the USA Network, apparently not bound to a single network.

It turns out Andy Roddick played his best match in the final. He’s great. The 140mph serves and clowning around will keep tennis entertaining for awhile.

Note: If the code linking to the interview is garbage you can listen to it by going to http://www.charleyrose.com Search "McEnroe" it is the one dated June 11, 2002.

Hey there god.

I saw the Roddick vs.Ferrero match. Like I said earlier,
the National Tennis Center crowd was behind Roddick and tennis is as much
a mental game as it is skill. I think Ferrero may have begun to psych
himself out on Saturday when he was interviewed after beating Agassi. Plus,
as McEnroe mentioned, he looked tired. I don't think we have seen the last
of Ferrero or Roddick.

Cute picture..lol..Do you have any of John McEnroe playing tennis? In the 80s when I was in college doing my undergraduate work I purchased a great poster of him; it was a
tennis action shot. He wore clothes by the sports companies he endorsed and at the time
endorsed Sergio Tachinni (I hope I spelled that name right) among others. The poster made
it home from college, back to my parents house and on to my bedroom wall. But,
when I moved out on my own into the apartment (where I live now), something happended to it.
(I think the movers forgot to move it out of the truck and when I realized what happened,
it was too late to do anything about it.) Oh how I loved that poster. I had it mounted
on matt board...It caught everyone's attention and I was able to look at it whenever
I wanted. Now my guess is...some mover has it. But, don't get me wrong...I am not
accusing anyone of stealing, you understand.

"The Chair" That was it. You have a great memory...That was the game show.
He did a fabulous job with the show...just great. I don't know that the show
was beneath him. I think what he did was well done.

There were probably things that the public will never know about with regard
to the Davis Cup. He was an excellent Team Captain (coach). But, sometimes
people have to make decisions and I remember hearing him talk about it after
he left. It was definitely a choice he made after much soul searching.

I guess he and Tatum O'neal broke up because she had a possible drug addiction.
It seems to me that she shouldn't have custody over those kids at all.. if that
is the case. (Have you read Dr. Drews book yet? You really need to if you haven't.
No one who is addicted to mind altering chemicals whether it be alcohol or drugs
has any business trying to raise children. Not until they get help.)

I never knew he and Patty Smyth performed together. I don't think John would
try and upstage Patty-sounds like they had a little misunderstanding.

I hope his art gallery is going well. I didn't know he opened one. Is it on
Long Island?

So...he's still vocal on the tennis court huh...with the fines? You know what? That
is the very thing that makes him so much fun to watch. He gets involved in
the tennis game and when he sees something that has been done wrong..like a bad call..he
does something about it. John is not afraid to speak his mind. He does not stay on
the fence. People like John are movers and shakers; they are the ones who make
advancements/progress take place.

Thanks god for all of the info. I must've really fallen behind in my John McEnroe
trivia. You brought me up to date. Also thanks for the link to the interview.
